Hi everyone!!
So I am starting my research to teach my boyfriend French!
The first thing I am looking for is a list of effective strategies to choose from, to start teaching!
So far, I've read an article that lists some good strategies that I am going to give a try!
The article explains the following strategies:1. Make language learning fun!
2. Spaced repetition is your friend!
3. Find bite sized chunks of time to devote to it!
4. Try TV as a teacher
5. Meetups is a social way to learn!
6. Don't sweat (the grammar) rules too much!
7. Don't worry about making a fool of yourself!
8. Have fun with it!
9. Use apps!

I think that this article lists some great ideas. One that I am going to try first is to make learning the language fun for Zach! I am going to set up a badge system (like we do in 8P73) to track his progress along the way! This will also allow him to feel motivated and accomplished as he earns badges along the way!
Another resource that I've looked at is a Ted blog! This blog lists the following effective strategies:
1. Get real (with setting attainable goals)!
2. Make language-learning a lifestyle change!
3. Play house with the language!
4. Let technology help you out!
5. Think about language-leanring as a gateway for new experiences!
6. Make new friends!
7. Don't worry about making mistakes!

Both of these sources highlight using apps/technology, and taking risks/not worrying about making mistakes. As I try and teach Zach French, I will start by ensuring we set realistic and attainable goals together, trying to set him up with an app and ensuring he knows he can make mistakes, and that we will learn together from them!
Another source I found is the video below:
Some of the strategies in this video stood out for me! For example, pair yourself with someone who speaks French, watch French movies, listen to French music, etc.! This video has given some good strategies that I will try with Zach!
What I learned: I learned that there are so many tools and ways to learn a new language, and it's about what is helpful for the students. There are things that I will try with Zach, that may not work, and that's okay! It's about finding out how he learns best, and finding tools to fit to his leaning style and needs.
What I struggles with: I struggles with finding a variety of sources that fit a magnitude of different learning styles. I did my best to find a range of resources, but it's not always the easiest.
What I need to do before my next Genius Hour: For my next genius hour, I think I am going to develop a badge system to keep Zach motivated! I am also going to explore and research different apps, as I know he loves apps and being able to engage with them!
Where do I go from here: From here, I continue my research on effective language learning strategies and how I can keep my student motivated and engaged.
Comment below if any of these strategies stand out for you, and if any have been effective for you!
Until next time,
-Sydney
