Hi everyone!
So this week, Zach and I have been working on completing his badge #2 (which is for knowing the days of the week).
To start this, Zach and I listened to a song to help him get familiar with the words! You can check it out below!
Zach absolutely loves this song, and keeps singing it! I'm gonna be honest, it's pretty catchy and stuck in my head as well!
The research I did showed how using songs can be very helpful. For Zach, he remembers thing by using tools like songs and rhymes, so I've determined this will help him with learning French!
Before/after we went into learning, I tested what Zach knew, and the results are below:

He has been having so much with this project, and I am so glad this is something that we get to do together and to see that he is actually learning!
After using the song, Zach was able to identify the days of the week in order and out of order. I also tested his knowledge from French-English and English to French!
He did so well! He has officially earned Badge 2!
This week was a bit challenging, as Zach has been able to pick up the numbers and days really quickly, with just the use of the song. I think it's because he took French when he was younger for a few years, and days and months are all he remembers. I asked him how he feels about the next badges, and he said that he doesn't know what the next badges require. If I were to do this again, I would use some sort of assessment for learning so that I could identify exactly what he knows and how we should proceed.
In order to prepare for my next genius hour, Zach and I are going to work on numbers. To do this, we are going to continue to use his Duolingo app, flashcards, and I am going to find another song (As he seems to love these so much!). I was able to do some research on the best strategies to teaching someone numbers in French. In addition to songs and apps, etc. this website suggested counting/number games as well! Zach loves games, and this is definitely something we can do. So, in order to prepare for next week, I will find a song, some games, and continue to work with Zach one on one!
Zach has been making some great progress! Even with using the app for just 20 minutes a day, he has been able to say different words to me here and there. I am overjoyed by how much passion and motivation he has for this project, and it is definitely making my job easier!
I can't wait to see how he continues to progress on this journey to learning a new language!
