Final Badge- Did Zach get it?

 Hi all,

This week, Zach has been working towards badge #5 (the final badge)!

To do this, Zach must:
  • be able to introduce himself with some detail (Hi my name is Zach. I enjoy playing soccer and studying science...)
  • be able to order food
  • be able to use vocabulary he has learned as completing the other badges
Before Zach could complete this badge we;

Went over some vocabulary, specific to his interests and things he would most likely say. We went over certain phrases that would be helpful. For example, je voudrais-> I would like.

We used the following resources from my past research:

Zach and I started with looking at some vocabulary/adjectives that he might use to describe himself (See list below):
  • To play soccer--> jouer au soccer
  • Study sciences --> étudier les sciences
  • Smart-->intelligent
  • Handsome-->beau
  • Fantastic-->fantastique
  • Incredible-->incroyable
Zach and I then went over some common phrases to order food including different foods. Zach repeated after me, and we continued the repetition. He has been making good progress with this!
Some of the phrases he seems to vibe with are:
  • Je voudrais-->I would like
  • Je prendrais--> I will take
  • Chicken fingers-->bâtonnet de poulet pané
  • Fries-->frites
  • Water-->l'eau
He was able to tell me what he'd want to order but required some prompting. To help with this, we are going to practice using food vocabulary. Every night Zach and I will describe what we want for dinner, to help him develop this vocab.

Since Zach still needs to spend maybe one more week on this badge! Stay tuned for my next blog post where I am confident Zach will earn his 5th and final badge!

What Next?

There are a few things that I need to do before my next blog post. For one thing, Zach and I have to make sure we are practicing using this vocab every night so that he gets familiar with it, and can eventually use it on his own, with no prompts. I am also going to come up with some sort of assessment to show the results of what he has learned. I am thinking of doing an oral assessment with a checklist/comments as well as a google form, for a more written version as well.

Reflection Time!
I think that this week went quite well, and that Zach has made some great progress! He is still using duolingo daily to help improve overall, and in combination with us working one on one, I think we are doing well! There were no challenges this week, other than trying to find some resources for him to use. We ended up using word reference because some of the words (ie. chicken fingers) were unique to Zach and was not on the websites I had found. This worked out though, because it showed Zach how he can use translating tools to help him!

I can't wait to see how Zach improves over the next week- stay tuned!

Until next time,
Sydney
